Alessandro Caimi

Master of Science in Bioengineering, PhD in Bioengineering (November 2019)

Cardiovascular Biomechanics.

Alessandro obtained his master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering (with a specialization in Biomechanics and Biomaterial) from Politecnico di Milano, in collaboration with the Artificial Heart Lab of The Penn State University, in 2015. His master thesis was focused on the development of a fluid-structure interaction model for the characterization of the performances of a pediatric ventricular assist device. Since November 2015, Alessandro is enrolled as PhD candidate in the Biomechanics Group of Politecnico di Milano, focusing in the cardiovascular modeling, with particular emphasis in the fields of computational fluid dynamics and structural mechanics, and in the development of image-based approaches to compute biomechanical variables in-vivo. During his PhD he has collaborated with Italian and extra-ue clinical partners (Policlinico San Donato, Boston Children’s Hospital, Harvard University) to create new strategies for the planning of percutaneous treatments in order to assess the feasibility of the stenting procedure in borderline patients and to predict short-term and mid-term complications in complex clinical scenarios, and for the development of new surgery procedures in patients with severe cardiovascular congenital diseases. Thanks to his expertise, acquired in these years, he has been involved in consulting with medical and extra-medical companies.

Within Silkelastograft, Alessandro will develop numerical models, exploiting fluid-structure interaction and finite element solvers, for the assessment of the performances of novel artero-venous shunts.
